Gassed by: John Singer SargentThe painting Gassed is depicting a line of soldiers that are in medical order seeking medical attention. They have their eyes bandaged due to the exposure of gas. It's a scene of the aftermath due to the mustard gas attack on the western front during August 1918. The painting hints at the hope for getting to the medical tent while it gives the aura of loss and suffering. Gassed is an oil painting finished in the March of 1919. Sargent was asked by the commissioners of the British War Memorial Committee to make a painting of remembrance. Sargent was there that 21st of August, 1918 and he painted what he witnessed. Once it was complete, it was on display at the Royal Academy in London. Many did not like the picture but it was still voted as the picture of the year at the Royal Academy. This painting struck up many questions about the use of chemicals during warfare.
