Peter PanAuthor J.M. Barrie was born May 9, 1860 in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Scotland. Barrie always dreamed of being an author and a playwright. The character Peter Pan was first introduced in The Little White Bird in 1902. Two years later, Peter Pan premiered on the London Stage and was a great success. Ever since, Peter Pan has been a classic favorite among children in the U.K. and throughout the entire world.

Subject: Peter Pan and Tinker Bell come and take the Darling children to Neverland where they explore the world and meet new characters like Captain Hook and the Lost Boys. When they return home, the Darling parents adopt all of the Lost Boys except for Peter Pan. Tone: Joyful, childish, and adventurous. However, there is a shift in tone when the kids tell Peter Pan that they do not want to stay in Neverland forever. The tone then becomes angry and disappointed. |

Audience: People of the U.K. are the audience because this is a classic folk tale that is a huge part of the culture of the U.K. Purpose: To show the culture behind the "Tale of the Black Dog." Subject: A man is going to milk his cows and takes a shortcut through the neighbor's yard. He comes across an evil black dog in the hedges. So he takes the long way around instead. However, he eventually becomes tired of this and decides to challenge his opponent. He struck the dog with all of his might and the dog disappeared. However, the fate if the man was just as unfortunate. He became paralyzed for the rest of his days. Tone: Mysterious, dark, and evil. "Attacks dog" and "paralyzed" are some statements that show these tones. The tone shifted from the man being satisfied with his daily routine to him being annoyed and angry because the dog was in his way. |
Aylesbury Black DogThis story is about a man who took a shortcut through his neighbor's yard every morning and night to milk his cow in a nearby field. However, one night he comes to find a fierce dog occupying the hedge. He is intimidated and decides to go around the other way. After several nights of the dog still being there, the man decided to challenge his opponent. He came in the night, set down his pails of milk and struck the dog with all his might. The dog banished but the man's fate was not any sweeter. The man became paralyzed for the rest of his days. This folktale is a classic in the U.K. because of the deep rooted culture and hidden lesson.
